WHAT WAS NEEDED

A new homeowner diagnosed with ALS could no longer access her yard and patio—two features that led her to that house. She needed a way to get from her deck to the patio. Because of the height of the deck, a wheelchair ramp was impractical if it met the requirements for slope. It would have to be over forty feet long. To access the yard 63 inches below, a wheelchair elevator was the only answer.

WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS ACCOMPLISHED

Scouting the internet, a Build Team volunteer found an elevator. It had the required vertical lift, hardly used, an $8,000 value—and it was free! We had to raise the elevator 16 inches and mount it to a concrete base. From there we could build a ramp at the proper slope to the yard.
